Lab 1: Layers, Maps, and Layouts#

In this lab, students will become familiar with working with GIS data, including adding data, visualizing data, and creating and exporting layouts. To complete this lab, refer to the following steps:

  1. Find a map that you like online or in published form. Describe what you like about the map and provide a citation.

  2. Download either the Mexico (data8-21.zip) or Utah (lab1.zip) data from the Canvas modules under Lab 1.

  3. Add the data to ArcGIS Pro or QGIS.

  4. Follow the steps in the below sections under Lab 1 to edit the symbology and create a layout view. Take inspiration if possible from the map that you identified in Step 1. Export your layout as a jpeg file.

  5. Share an image of the map that you identified in Step 1 and share your layout on the Canvas discussion board.

  6. Were you able to match the style of your chosen map or not? What additional data would you need to match the style of your chosen map?
